Back in January, I wrote briefly about the post-travel blues I was dealing with after returning from several months of travel in Central America. Honestly, even though that trip helped me determine once and for all that long-term solo travel isn’t what I want right now, it was still a major challenge to return home back to “ordinary” life…i.e. life that doesn’t revolve around finding the perfect daily fiesta/siesta balance, scuba diving every morning, and exploring magical jungles and mountain towns in Guatemala and Nicaragua.
However, I’m very happy to say that these days, the fog has been lifted, and I’m totally happy and thankful to be exactly where I am right now in life. I’m pretty sure that I owe part of this new-found contentment to the frequent stateside adventures I’ve been having over the past several months. As I’ve mentioned before, a big goal of mine this year is to see more U.S. cities, and so far I’ve already paid visits to Austin, New Orleans, San Diego, and a bit of hometown exploring right here in Houston.
I love the idea of creating your own adventures when and where you can, even if that means staying put in your home city, state, or country. Needless to say, I’m feeling totally inspired by these 8 incredible Airbnb rentals, located right here in Texas! It’s an awesome reminder that there are some really cool experiences to be had and sights to be seen all over the world, including close to home.
Two-Story Barn-Treehouse in the Woods, San Marcos
This little gem is located on a 6-acre wooded lot just outside of San Marcos, and comes equipped with a clawfoot bathtub, upstairs kitchenette, indoor wood-burning stove, outdoor fire pit and grill, and a second-floor porch with forest views.
Those windows! Those plants! Those airy ceilings!
For me, this is exactly the type of place I’d love to spend a long weekend hiding away from the world. I can just imagine all of the hours of writing I’d get done in this peaceful little nature haven.
Central Colorful Artist Home, Austin
Leave it to Austin to have a little home that’s as cute, colorful, and charming as this one! There’s a backyard courtyard as well as a rooftop, and the owner keeps parakeets, quail and finches in a covered area out back.
Plus, plenty of good food, coffee, and drinks within walking distance?! Sign me up!
Rustic Private Cabin on the Blanco River, Wimberley
Oh, Wimberely – is it possible for a more endearing place to exist? The tiny town Hill Country feel, the boutique shops and charming local eateries, and of course the shockingly beautiful scenery. And now to think that there’s a home as adorable as this one to enjoy the whole spectacle from?
This rustic cabin home boasts a view of the Blanco River from the front porch, the opportunity to spot deer, birds and other wildlife outside, and the chance to hide away from the world “deep in the heart of Texas.” *Swoon*
The Safehouse, Houston
If you’re looking for more of an urban getaway, look no further than good old Houston. This baller east-downtown loft has a skylight, totally cool brick and metal decor, and a comfy indoor hammock. Not to mention, a trendy up-and-coming urban neighborhood just outside your doorstep!
I’m even dreaming of escaping here for a night or two…and I live just down the street!
Airstream in Cameron Park, Waco
I mean, does it really get any cooler than a vintage airstream?! While you’d certainly have to be comfortable living as a bit of a minimalist in order to stay here, I have a feeling the playful decor and funky, artsy vibes would make anyone feel right at home.
This charming living space even has an amazing outdoor shower, an outdoor cantina for grilling, a meditation corner, and bikes available to borrow for exploring the nearby 416-acre Cameron Park. You could spend your days kayaking down the Brazos River and hiking along the park’s limestone bluffs, and retreat back to your own little cozy airstream home each evening. I think I’m in love!
Glamping Yurt at Green Acres Retreat, Elgin
If staying in a renovated airstream isn’t quite cool and hipster enough for you, say hello to these incredible yurts in Elgin, just outside of Austin. If this location doesn’t just scream “Texas Hill Country”, then I don’t know what does.
This property includes access to a communal vintage barn, a modern bathhouse, walking trails in the woods, a fire pit, and some seriously adorable alpacas and donkeys.
Free Spirit Farmhouse Glampsite, Fredericksburg
In case one glamping option wasn’t enough, this safari style tent near Enchanted Rock in Fredericksburg is sure to give you serious Hill Country wanderlust.
You can build a campfire, enjoy coffee and breakfast bars in the communal barn, and snuggle with the farm’s mini donkeys. Um, yes to all of the above?!
Mining Ruin Lofthouse, Terlingua
Maybe none of these Texas Airbnb options are ~Texas-y~ enough for you. I get it; you want to see deserts, cactuses, tumbleweeds blowing in the wind, and endless starry skies. Well, have I got a treat for you!
This renovated miner’s home in the heart of an old Texas ghost town (!!!) has 360 degree views of the Chisos Mountains and Big Bend National Park. You can hike and explore in the park, or just sit on your porch all day long, and watch the hot Texas sun rise and set without moving a muscle. Count me in!

Sign me up! Those places are amazing! I would love to stay in each one.
I’m with you on finding ways to enjoy the cities and places around you. I think it takes leaving for us to truly appreciate what was there and what we may have ignored before we left. I live life in VA so much differently since we moved back from CA and I love it!

You’re definitely right about the leaving part…I’ve noticed recently how much more I’ve appreciated the fun things my hometown, home state and home country have to offer since returning from Central America.

As I was scrolling through this post, I kept thinking, “This one is my favorite! No…this one has GOT to be my favorite!” You’ve got an excellent eye for fabulous AirBnBs. Oftentimes I think of more abroad locations having the coolest AirBnBs but maybe I have to look in my own backyard. Awesome post!
